The
trek through Sherpa-land offers an insight into their
unique culture and lifestyle. Known for their feats of
courage and endurance on the world’s highest mountains,
for their understanding, hardiness and humors, the
Sherpas are indispensable in managing treks.
After a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,800m),
the trek begins through the trails that wind slowly
downwards to touch the Dudhkoshi River passing through
fragrant forests of juniper, blue pine and fir. Between
3,600m and 4,200m birch and rhododendron trees
predominate. Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the largest of
Sherpa settlements is right after the walk along a steep
uphill trail. Thyangboche, the Buddhist monastery is
further above after a long climb. The original monastery
was burnt down in an accidental fire resulting in loss
of invaluable religious paintings and scrolls. The
newly-reconstructed gompa is famous as the setting for
the Mani Rimdu dance festival in late October or early
November. Views of Mt. Everest (8,850m). Lhotse
(8,516m), Nuptse (7,855m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), Cho-Oyu
(8,201m), from here are simply awe-inspiring. On the way
the rare musk deer, the national bird of Nepal - the
colorful Danphe pheasant, the Ghoral, the Himalayan wolf
and the black Bear and endangered species like the snow
Leopard, the red Panda are sometimes spotted.
