Kathmandu
– Nagarkot - Chitwan
This
seven-day itinerary offers cultural and historical tours of
ancient Kathmandu valley and wildlife tour in one of the most
popular national parks of Nepal, the Royal Chitwan National
Park.
For
centuries Kathmandu valley has been at the hub of Nepalese
national life. Apart from being the seat of monarchial and
political power, it is also a vast open-air living museum of
art and architecture, culture and music which have been
enriched over the ages by an intermingling of various ethnic
races, peoples of diverse origins and religious beliefs.
Driving over winding
roads, you visit the tiny settlement of Nagarkote, 32 kms east
of Kathmandu at an altitude of 2,099m. Within half a
day’s drive crossing the hilly area of the valley to the lower
flat lands of the Terai lies the Chitwan National Park, the
former hunting reserve for the ruling Ranas, European
royalties and Viceroys of India and now a national park
protecting wildlife since 1973. The Chitwan valley, lying
between the Churia and Mahabharat range and drained by two
major rivers, the Narayani and the Rapti, is home of Royal
Bengal Tiger, one-horned Asia Rhinoceros, Gangeic Dolphin,
over 450 species of birds and many other wild animals.
