Kathmandu
– Dhulikhel
The
valley of Kathmandu consists of three medieval cities Patan,
Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. Patan, the city of fine arts is the
oldest, old enough by some accounts to have received the
Buddha and later his devout disciple, Asoka. Bhaktapur, a city
of devotees is the most preserved and is a symphony in craved
wood, embellished stone and russet bricks. Kathmandu, with its
hub around the Kasthamandap consists of the unique temple of
living goddess Kumari, magnificent temple of Taleju, Hanuman
Dhoka palace where coronation and royal functions take place
even today. Among the many treasures of Kathmandu are golden
roofed temples of Pashupatinath and the great stupa of
Boudhnath and Swayambhunath, where from the golden pinnacle
the painted eyes of the all-seeing Buddha gaze across the
valley. An enjoyable drive through the countryside from
Bhaktapur leads to Dhulikhel on the Arniko Highway. Panoramic
views of central Himalayas from Cho-Oyu in the east to
Himalchuli in the west and sunset and sunrise views are
spectacular from Dhulikhel.
